On 5 April 1940 two fillers were accidentally gassed and killed at Usworth Colliery, in County Durham.

Cause
The two men were accidentally overcome by gas underground.
What happened
A. Atkinson, a filler of 30, and Alfred Lloyd, a filler of 33, were killed when they were accidentally gassed at Usworth. A later newspaper account recorded honours for the conduct of others at the colliery around the time.
