An overwound cage struck the headframe and fell 535 yards down the shaft at Houghton Main Colliery on the morning of 30 December 1886, killing all 10 men and boys riding in it; the engineman was tried for manslaughter and acquitted.

Cause

At around 7:50am, the engineman, Allen Beresford, overwound the cage carrying the men, sending it into the headframe; the winding rope then broke and the cage, with the men still in it, fell 535 yards to the bottom of the shaft.

Contributing factors

Beresford himself was struck by falling debris from the winding house roof, damaged in the same incident, and was knocked unconscious.

What happened

The disaster struck as the men were being wound up the shaft at the start of the working day. Three generations of some families were lost together: Joseph Walker, a collier, died alongside his sons Samuel and Charles, both trammers; James Hardcastle, also a collier, died alongside his son Alvin, a trammer; and Joseph Pearson, a collier, died alongside his son, also named Joseph. The youngest victim, William Barton, a pony driver, was seventeen.
