A New Cumnock football club founded in 1875 under the auspices of, and named after, the Lanemark Coal Company -- the same company that operated Afton Colliery's No. 2 shaft.

The mining history in this record

Lanemark Football Club was established in 1875 at Connel Park, New Cumnock, taking its name directly from the Lanemark Coal Company, formed in 1865 by the mining engineer Robert Brown, the leaseholder John Hunter and the builder John Paton to work coal around Lanemark Farm. The company actively encouraged workforce recreation, running both a football and a cricket club for its men, and the football club's first recorded match, a 0-2 defeat to Cumnock, was played on 28 August 1875. Lanemark joined the Ayrshire Football Association in 1877 and enjoyed a strong early run through the early 1880s, including a 19-0 win over Kilmarnock St Crispin and a 12-1 win over Barkip in the 1881-82 Ayrshire Cup, though the club was eliminated in the first round of the Scottish Cup in most seasons. Key players included the captain William Cullen, a colliery clerk credited with organising the team, the forward David Currie, selected for Ayrshire representative matches, and the half-back John Graham, who later won a full Scotland cap in January 1884 while playing for Annbank. The club's best Scottish Cup run came in 1888-89, when it reached the fourth round after beating Stevenston Thistle 7-0, and it reached the 1906-07 Ayrshire Cup final -- beating both Kilmarnock and Ayr on the way -- before losing to Hurlford. Lanemark folded in August 1921 after financial difficulties forced its withdrawal from the 1920-21 Scottish Cup qualifying rounds.

People

Robert Brown (mining engineer), John Hunter (leaseholder) and John Paton (builder), who formed the Lanemark Coal Company in 1865; William Cullen, colliery clerk and club captain; John Graham, Scotland international half-back (capped 1884, by then playing for Annbank); David Currie, Ayrshire representative forward.

Legacy today

Connel Park continued to host New Cumnock football after Lanemark's demise: the junior club New Cumnock United played there from 1921 to the late 1920s, and Glenafton Athletic -- founded in 1930 as New Cumnock's coal industry recovered from depression -- began its own life at the same ground before relocating in 1960.
