Wanlockhead Miners' Library

Established on 1 November 1756 by thirty-two lead miners 'for our mutual improvement', the Wanlockhead Miners' Library was the second subscription library for working people founded anywhere, modelled directly on the one the miners of neighbouring Leadhills had set up fifteen years earlier.

The mining history in this record

Wanlockhead and Leadhills sit barely a mile and a half apart across the county boundary, and what began in one village was quickly copied in the other. Thirty-two men founded the Wanlockhead library on 1 November 1756 with a stated purpose — 'for our mutual improvement' — that names the Leadhills principle outright. Membership was not cheap even with help: the miners subscribed, the mining companies contributed, and the Duke of Buccleuch, who owned the ground the village stood on, was a major patron. The first woman member joined in 1784.

The collection outgrew a succession of homes, beginning in the village schoolhouse, before the purpose-built library that still stands opened in January 1851.

People

The Duke of Buccleuch, the landowner whose family had built the village's first smelt mill around 1680, was the library's major patron alongside the mining companies and the miners' own subscriptions.

Legacy today

The library holds 2,577 books, the oldest printed in 1616 — religion the largest single subject at 411 volumes, then biography, geography and fiction, with a working collection on geology and minerals and 66 books by women authors. The building is Category A listed and now has environmental controls to protect the collection. The Wanlockhead Museum Trust has managed its conservation since 1974, and the library is reachable year-round by arrangement and seasonally through the Museum of Lead Mining, which is marking its 270th anniversary in 2026.
