Mines in Yorkshire

Britain's largest historic county holds two quite different mining traditions: lead mining in the Yorkshire Dales, worked since at least the Norman period and once supporting whole communities and even a medieval priory, and the 19th-century Cleveland ironstone field along the North Sea coast, whose deep shaft mines fed the Teesside iron and steel industry until the last of them closed in 1964.
