The East Riding is chalk country. The Yorkshire Wolds curve across it from the Humber to Flamborough, and where they meet the estuary the chalk has been quarried on a large scale for lime, cement and industrial whiting alongside the clay pits and brickworks of the Humber bank. Its quarries are also of national geological importance: the Welton Chalk Formation takes its name from this ground and has its type locality here.
