Mines in South Gloucestershire

South Gloucestershire's mineral claim to fame is a mineral most people have never heard of. The Triassic ground around Yate and Chipping Sodbury held the largest and purest concentration of celestine in the world, and for the better part of a century almost all the strontium used anywhere on earth came out of these fields — dug at first by farm labourers with picks in the slack season.
