England's smallest county was, for a century, one of its ironstone counties. Low-grade Jurassic ore was stripped from open quarries around Cottesmore and Exton Park by some of the largest excavating machines ever built in Britain, and then the land was put back so thoroughly that the industry is now almost invisible.
