Mines in Glasgow

Glasgow's own extractive history is largely buried beneath the city, but its southern edge — Darnley, Nitshill and the Brock Burn valley — carries one of the earliest documented records in the west of Scotland: limestone leased at Over Darnley in 1610 and coal worked by 1615. Limestone, fireclay and coal were still being taken there into the twentieth century, the fireclay feeding kilns that made bricks, pipes and sanitary ware. Much of that ground is now the Dams to Darnley Country Park.
