Mines in Bristol

Bristol was a coal city long before it was anything else industrial, with pits at Bedminster, Easton and Kingswood and, at the height of the 19th century, some twenty-five pitheads around Bedminster and Ashton Gate alone. The coalfield was small, awkward and technologically conservative, and the city has almost entirely forgotten it: the last pit closed in 1925 and the ground is now streets.
