Earls Fitzwilliam of Wentworth Woodhouse

The aristocratic family who owned and developed the collieries and ironworks at Elsecar and built the model village around them. William Wentworth, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam, ordered the Newcomen pumping engine of 1795; a later Earl twice refused Henry Ford's offers to buy it. Distinct from Earl Fitzwilliam's Collieries Co. Ltd, the limited company through which the same family held its collieries from 1936 to nationalisation.
