Clay Cross Company

The Derbyshire coal, ironstone, iron and limestone company founded in 1837 by George Stephenson as his Derby to Leeds railway drove its tunnel through the district, with Robert Stephenson, Charles Binns, George Hudson, Sir Joshua Walmsley and Sir Morton Peto among those involved. Sir William Jackson had bought all its interests by 1871 and it became a limited company in 1913. Its numbered collieries included No. 9, the Avenue Blackshale pit at Wingerworth.
