Cause

Two boys walking out along the incline were struck by a moving journey of trams.

What happened

On 31 October 1914 two collier's assistants, Isaac Thomas, 16, and Arthur Edward Anderson, 15, were coming out from underground at Maesteg Deep when a journey of trams came along the incline. The boy walking with Thomas reached a manhole; Thomas and Anderson were struck and dragged a long way, and both were killed. Anderson had worked at the mine for three months.

Investigation & inquiry

The manager told the inquest that riding on the engine plane was prohibited and notices were posted; the jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
