Cause

A centre tree knocked out by the pony's tail chain at a lye, bringing down a heavy fall of roof.

What happened

Russell, aged 14, was driving a pony drawing a rake of loaded hutches, with White, 21, riding on it. At a lye the pony appears to have stepped across the road, and its tail chain caught a tree set in the middle of the road and displaced it. A heavy fall of roof followed and killed them both.

Investigation & inquiry

The inspector's account noted that White had contravened a Special Rule by riding on the hutches.
