In 2024 the Newbold Coleorton Heritage Group marked the centenary of New Lount Colliery, sunk at Newbold in 1924, with heritage events that included a celebration day at the former colliery on 14 September, part of North West Leicestershire's Hello Heritage month.
The mining history in this record
New Lount Colliery was sunk at Newbold, Coleorton, in 1924 and closed in 1968; its spoil heap and site were reclaimed as New Lount Nature Reserve, where a boulder with a plaque commemorates all who worked there. The colliery also lit the village: Newbold was among the first villages in England with electric street lighting and household electricity, supplied from the pit.
Legacy today
The Newbold Coleorton Heritage Group, which installed New Lount Colliery information boards across the nature reserve in 2017, staged the centenary events. The day of 14 September 2024 offered interactive characters, talks from historians and exhibitions, within a month of district heritage events; it was followed the next day by a Leicestershire Coal Mining Heritage Day at Snibston Colliery Park.
