A brass band founded in 1904 by the mining community of Dinnington, South Yorkshire, that nearly folded after its colliery's 1992 closure before a BBC television documentary sparked a recruitment drive that saved it.
The mining history in this record
The band was founded in 1904 in Dinnington, drawn from the town's own coal mining community, and was known for part of its history as the Dinnington Main and Middleton prize brass band. It remained closely tied to the colliery and the wider town for its first eighty-eight years, with membership drawn from across the community — players as young as seven and as old as eighty have belonged to it.
Dinnington Colliery closed in 1992, and the band, like so many other colliery bands stripped of the community and welfare funding that had sustained them, went into steep decline: by 2009 it had fallen to just six members. In 2010 the BBC selected Dinnington from a shortlist of 22 brass bands across the country to feature in a three-part television documentary, 'A Band For Britain', presented and conducted by Sue Perkins. The exposure proved transformative: a recruitment drive that followed the broadcast brought 21 new members into the band, and it released an accompanying album under the same title.
People

Legacy today
The band survives and continues to compete, in the Third Section of the Yorkshire Region, more than three decades after the colliery that gave it its name closed.
