The Vale of Glamorgan is the low, fertile coastal country west of Cardiff, lying south of the coalfield rather than in it. Its mineral history is accordingly a different one: Carboniferous limestone worked from inliers in the Triassic mudstones for building stone, lime and later roadstone and concrete aggregate, together with small and intermittent workings for haematite. The great nineteenth-century demand came not from the Vale itself but from the docks at Barry and Cardiff, built to ship the coal brought down from the valleys behind them.
