Mines in Aberdeenshire
Aberdeenshire's mining story is dominated by Rubislaw Quarry, sold off by Aberdeen City Council in 1778 after they judged it unlikely to yield good building stone — a verdict proved badly wrong by the six million tonnes of granite eventually extracted, stone that built much of the city, including Marischal College, and gave Aberdeen its enduring nickname, the Granite City.
