William Dixon Ltd
Sank and first operated Polkemmet Colliery, 1913 until nationalisation in 1947, and also worked Blantyre and Auchlochan. The firm descends from William Dixon (1753–1822), who managed and then owned the Govan (Little Govan) colliery on the south side of Glasgow from the 1770s, and whose son founded the Govan Iron Works — Dixon’s Blazes — in 1839.
