William Dixon (1753–1822) came to Scotland from Northumberland in 1771 and began as manager of the Govan (Little Govan) colliery in the 1770s, becoming its lessee and by 1820 its sole proprietor. A railway pioneer, he laid the line that carried its coal to the Clyde and built the miners’ cottages out of which Govanhill grew. His son William founded the Govan Iron Works in 1839. He is the origin of the later firm William Dixon Ltd, recorded separately in this archive against Polkemmet, Blantyre and Auchlochan collieries.
