A South Yorkshire colliery company, owner of the Treeton, Orgreave and Fence pits, which leased the coal under the Thurcroft estates in 1902, sank Thurcroft Colliery from 1909 and built the village around it from 1913. The company passed to the National Coal Board at nationalisation in 1947. The company was formed in 1875 when the Fence Colliery Company, which had acquired Orgreave from the Sorby family in 1870, was renamed; its directors leased land in the area from the Duke of Norfolk in the same year.
