Nixon's Navigation Coal Co. Ltd.

The company founded on John Nixon's Mountain Ash workings. Nixon, born at Barlow in County Durham in 1815, began as a workman on the Durham coalfield, surveyed for the Marquis of Bute around Merthyr, and made his money selling Welsh steam coal to the French — which financed the lease of the Mountain Ash mineral rights. By 1896 the company employed 1,558 men here and the Nixon group's output was about 1,250,000 tons a year.
