Lothian Coal Company
Sank Lady Victoria Colliery from 1890 as its showpiece pit, named for Lady Victoria Alexandrina Montagu Scott, wife of the company's chairman, the 9th Marquess of Lothian. The company also built the purpose-built model village of Newtongrange to house the colliery's workforce.
