Barber, Walker and Company

The Nottinghamshire colliery firm of Eastwood, trading under that name from about 1800 and with collieries at Eastwood and Langley Mill as Barber and Company from 1700. By 1872 it worked Eastwood, Cotmanhay, Hill Top, Watnall, New Watnall, Beggarlee, Underwood, High Park, Moorgreen and Brinsley, and by 1924 employed over 7,000 people. It proved and sank Bentley Colliery from the 1890s, bought Harworth Colliery for £80,100 in 1917 after wartime restrictions had stalled the original sinking company's work, and held both until the 1947 nationalisation of the coal industry.
