Pinxton Colliery fall of coal, 1902

Two stallmen, Edward Haywood Bradshaw and Edward Haywood, were killed at Pinxton No. 1 pit on 10 April 1902 when the sprags propping the coal they were holing gave way and a large block fell on them.

Cause

The holing sprags gave way while the men were undercutting the coal face, and a large block of coal fell on them.

What happened

On 10 April 1902 two stallmen were holing the face of the Deep Hard coal at Pinxton No. 1 pit, worked by the Pinxton Coal Company, when the sprags set to hold up the undercut coal gave way. A large block of coal fell on both men and killed them: Edward Haywood Bradshaw, 21, and Edward Haywood, 38.

Investigation & inquiry

Arthur H. Stokes, inspector for the Midland district, recorded the accident in his report for 1902 (Cd 1590).
