What happened

On Monday 4 December 1911 a fall of coal and band at Dipton Colliery, John Bowes and Partners' pit in north-west Durham, killed two hewers: John William Greener, 44, and William Walker, 32. The accident was classed as a fall of side, coal and stone coming away from the face or the side of the working rather than the roof. Both men were buried in the churchyard of St John the Evangelist at Dipton.
