The mining history in this record

Ryhope Colliery Welfare Football Club was founded in 1892 by coal miners of Ryhope, the village south of Sunderland whose colliery drew its first coal in 1860. It played in the Wearside League for most of its history, won its first title in 1927-28 and took four more in the 1960s. In 1967-68 it reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for the only time, losing 1-0 at home to Workington, then a Fourth Division side.

Between 1988-89 and 1991-92 the club was known as Vaux Ryhope after a merger with Sporting Club Vaux, formerly South Hetton F.C., and from 2015 it was officially Sunderland Ryhope Colliery Welfare, though it was generally still called by its old name. It won all four Wearside competitions in 2010-11 and again in 2011-12, and was promoted to the Northern League; in 2012-13, after finishing second, it was sent back to the Wearside League over ground grading. It won the Durham Challenge Cup in 2022 but resigned from the Northern League that June and folded.

Legacy today

The club was re-formed in 2026 and rejoined the Wearside League, playing as The Colliery Welfare at Ryhope Recreation Park on Ryhope Street.
