A Doncaster-area football club founded in 1919 directly as Rossington Main Colliery Athletic, renamed Rossington Miners Welfare after nationalisation, and still playing today, over three decades after the colliery itself closed for good.

The mining history in this record

Rossington Main F.C. was founded in 1919 as Rossington Main Colliery Athletic, giving the colliery's workforce an organised football club of their own; it made its FA Cup debut in 1921 and competed regularly in the competition until the Second World War, reaching the fourth qualifying round in 1924-25 before losing 0-3 to Lincoln City. The club moved to its current ground on Oxford Street, now known as Kalkut's Community Stadium, in 1923. Its best season came just after the war, in 1944-45, when it won both the Doncaster Senior League and the Doncaster Senior League Cup.

The club operated under the Rossington Colliery name for three decades before renaming itself Rossington Miners Welfare in 1948, following the nationalisation of the coal industry the previous year. It adopted its current name, Rossington Main, between the 1980s and 1990s, becoming a founding member of the Central Midlands League, before joining the Northern Counties East League in 1991.

Legacy today

The club has continued to grow long after the colliery it was named for closed in 2006: promoted to Non-League step 5 for the first time in its history in 2022-23, and finishing 4th in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division in 2023-24, its highest-ever league position, drawing a record crowd of 1,697 for a pre-season friendly against Doncaster Rovers.
