Murton Colliery Welfare F.C.

The football club of a County Durham pit village, founded in 1891 as Murton Red Star, which took the colliery welfare's name in 1928 when it moved to the Recreation Ground and kept it for half a century.

The club was founded in 1891 as Murton Red Star and played at a ground called Fatten Pasture. In 1928 two things happened together: it moved to the Recreation Ground and changed its name to Murton Colliery Welfare, the name of the body that provided the ground. It played under that name for about fifty years, until it became simply Murton in 1979.

As Murton it went on through the Wearside League, finishing runner-up in 1985-86 and 1986-87, joined the Northern League's Second Division in 1988-89 and won it at the first attempt, and was Northern League runner-up on goal difference in 1991-92.

Legacy today

Points deductions and relegations followed through the 2000s; the club moved to the Northern Alliance in 2004-05, was relegated, promoted again in 2007-08 and left the Alliance in 2012, latterly playing in the Wearside League. Its last piece of silverware was the Durham FA Trophy on 21 April 2008, beating Whitehill Welfare 3-1 — its first since 1993. Murton Colliery closed in 1991; the Recreation Ground the welfare laid out for the pit's men outlasted it.
