A football club formed on 30 July 1908 to give the miners of Frickley Colliery a recreational outlet, funded in its early decades by subscriptions taken directly from workers' wages, and still playing today under the name it eventually took once the 'Colliery' had gone from its title.
The mining history in this record
Frickley Athletic F.C. was formed on 30 July 1908, one arm of the wider Frickley Athletic Club, itself established to give the miners of the newly-sunk Frickley Colliery a recreational outlet alongside its own cricket club. Workers at the colliery paid subscriptions directly from their wages to support both teams, and the club was known in its early years as Frickley Colliery Athletic. The colliery's own welfare funds backed the construction of the ground's main stand in 1927-28.
Over the decades the 'Colliery' identifier fell out of everyday use, and the club formally adopted the shorter name Frickley Athletic F.C. in 1974. Frickley Colliery itself closed in 1993, a blow that, alongside the wider decline of the coalfield community it served, brought difficult years for the club.
