The mining history in this record
The club's earliest known fixture dates to 1894, playing simply as South Kirkby in local Barnsley Association Football Union competitions. Around 1904-05 it formally adopted the name South Kirkby Colliery, cementing a relationship the club had already built with the workforce of the nearby pit. The colliery's own miners donated a small sum from their wages each week to support the club, making it, by the standards of the local non-league game, quite well off.
That backing translated into real success: the club won the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup, the oldest county cup competition in England, in both 1929-30 and 1940-41, alongside multiple league championships across the Sheffield Association League, the Doncaster & District Senior League and other competitions, and reached the FA Cup's fourth qualifying round three times.
