Brodsworth Welfare F.C.

A South Yorkshire football club founded in 1908 by the sports and pastimes club of Brodsworth Main Colliery, which has carried the pit's name for more than a century through four names, two dissolutions and a merger, and still plays at the Welfare Ground.

The mining history in this record

The club was founded in 1908 as Brodsworth Main, taking its name from the colliery, and was run by the Brodsworth Main Colliery Sports and Pastimes Club. It played in Doncaster and district football for most of its early life. In 1963 it changed its name to Brodsworth Miners Welfare, to reflect the miners' welfare support behind it, and under that name climbed into the Yorkshire League, winning promotion to its First Division in 1963-64 and falling back again through the 1960s and 1970s until it left the league in 1976.

It returned to senior football in 1988-89 in the Northern Counties East League, was carried into Division One when the league restructured in 1991, and reached the Premier Division in 1999 as Division One runners-up on goal difference. Points deductions followed in three seasons of the 2000s. In 2006 the club dropped the word Miners and became Brodsworth Welfare.

Legacy today

The club's record attendance, 1,251, came at the Welfare Ground in 2006 for an FA Vase tie against FC United of Manchester. Since 2011 it has moved between the Doncaster Senior League and the Central Midlands League, was dissolved at the end of the 2019-20 season, was revived for 2022-23, and ahead of the 2025-26 season merged with Hatfield Town to form a new club under the old name, Brodsworth Main. The colliery closed in 1990; the ground is still the Welfare Ground, and the welfare that built it is still in the club's name.
