David Fincher's Alien 3 filmed the opening scenes of its prison planet, Fiorina 'Fury' 161, on Blast Beach at Dawdon, near Seaham, a shore built up from the waste that Dawdon Colliery and its neighbours tipped over the cliffs.

The mining history in this record

Dawdon Colliery was sunk on the rocky promontory of Nose's Point from 1900 and drew coal from 1907 until 1991. Like the other collieries along the Durham coast it tipped its waste off the cliffs into the sea, and the beach below, known locally as 'the Blast', became a dumping ground of coal waste.

Alien 3 used the Blast for the exterior of Fiorina 'Fury' 161, the bleak prison planet on whose industrial shore Ripley crash-lands at the start of the film. One account says the opening sequence was shot while cranes along the cliff top were still tipping waste onto the beach.

Legacy today

Dawdon Colliery closed in 1991, and between 1997 and 2002 the Turning the Tide projects cleared and restored the coast. Blast Beach is now open shore again, though pools stained red and yellow, apparently by iron oxides, still mark the old tipping ground.
