The mining history in this record

East Hetton Colliery at Kelloe had its own miners' lodge, and the lodge's banner, known as the Kelloe banner, was carried to the Durham Miners' Gala. Photographs in the Durham Record show the East Hetton (Kelloe) Lodge NUM banner arriving at the Racecourse in about 1965 to 1970 and at the Gala in 1974, both times bearing a portrait of Hugh Gaitskell.

Most of the miners of neighbouring Quarrington Hill worked at East Hetton, and the Kelloe (East Hetton) and Quarrington Hill banners have been photographed together at the Gala.

People

Hugh Gaitskell is portrayed on the banner of the 1960s and 1970s.

Legacy today

The banner was still carried at the Durham Miners' Gala in 2002, as the East Hetton - Kelloe banner.
