Mudstone

A fine-grained sedimentary rock of consolidated clay and silt. Rarely worth quarrying for its own sake — it is too weak for building and too soft for roadstone — mudstone matters to this archive chiefly as the parent rock of slate, which is mudstone recrystallised under pressure, and as the rock that small local quarries cut through for track material and in doing so expose sections valuable to geologists.
