A hard, black, fossilised form of ancient driftwood, related to coal, found within certain marine shale deposits and traditionally dug or gathered from cliffs and worked by hand. Valued since prehistory, and especially in Victorian Britain, as a gemstone for jewellery and mourning ornament.
