South Ayrshire's most distinctive quarrying story belongs to Ailsa Craig, the granite island in the Firth of Clyde whose unique microgranite has supplied the world's curling stones since the 1850s, alongside a short-lived, heavily capitalised roadstone quarry opened there in 1907.
