Mines in Moray

Moray's quarries cut the New Red Sandstone that runs along the south shore of the Moray Firth — yellow and buff rather than the red of the Borders, hard, siliceous and very durable. Shipped out first by sea from the Hopeman coast, it has faced buildings from Elgin to Edinburgh, and from one still-working quarry it now goes to New York and Barcelona.
