Mines in Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire's mining is the story of one bed of low-grade Jurassic ironstone east of Scunthorpe. Rediscovered in 1859, it turned a group of villages into a steel town within a generation, was worked first in vast open quarries and later underground, and was abandoned only when it became cheaper to ship better ore in through Immingham than to dig this out of the ground next door.
