Mine agent in the Hope Valley, Shropshire, in the 1870s: agent for the West Tankerville Mining Company at East Roman Gravels from 1870, where he modified the engine house in 1871, and for Roman Gravels Company Ltd, where he trialled compressed-air rock drills in 1877.
