Wells, Birch, Ryde and Co.
The firm that sank Hoyland Silkstone Colliery at Platts Common, near Barnsley. Charles Wells, a Hull shipowner, took a sub-lease of the old Hoyland and Elsecar pits in 1864 and was joined by the Manchester mineral merchants William Singleton Birch and John Ryde; the limited company was incorporated in July 1874 with a capital of £100,000. Renamed the Hoyland Silkstone Colliery Company after 1880, it went into voluntary liquidation in December 1883.
