John Whitehead Greaves
Began commercial slate production at Bowydd quarry in 1833, before going on to found the neighbouring Llechwedd quarry in 1846, where he nearly lost everything before his workers, carrying on unpaid, struck the rich 'Old Merioneth Vein' that secured the quarry's future.
