MineArchiveHulton Colliery Company
A Lancashire coal firm working four collieries around Over Hulton and Chequerbent on the western edge of the Manchester coalfield. By 1910 it raised about 2,400 tons a day from seven coal-drawing shafts and employed roughly 2,400 people. It is remembered almost entirely for the Pretoria Pit explosion of that December, after which it paid into a relief fund that eventually raised £145,000 and was still making payments to a survivor in 1973.
