Ferens and Love

Owners of Cornsay Colliery from its opening in 1868 until nationalisation, latterly as Ferens & Love (1937) Ltd. They worked the colliery by four drifts, ran 270 coke ovens and a brick, tile and sanitary pipe works on the site, and held their royalties from Ushaw College, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and Miss Taylor-Smith besides a large freehold of their own.
