Edward M. Wass reopened Millclose Mine in Derbyshire in 1859, deepening its shafts and installing a Cornish pumping engine to reach a new ore-rich area of the pipe vein, giving the mine several more productive decades before catastrophic flooding finally closed it in 1940.
