David Mushet
Scottish metallurgist (1772–1847) who came to the Forest of Dean in 1810 to manage the Whitecliff Ironworks at Coleford and built a coke-fired experimental furnace at Darkhill in 1818-19. The Dark Hill gale was confirmed to him in 1841 and he had the neighbouring Shutcastle gale by 1847. The colliery existed largely to supply his own ironmaking, most of which was research rather than production.
