Overview

A mine and magical forge shared by dwarf, gnome and human allies under the Phandelver's Pact, lost for five hundred years after an orc army and mercenary wizards destroyed much of the cavern fighting over it, and rediscovered only a month before the adventure's present, by the very prospectors whose murder sets the story in motion.

History

More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes agreed to share a rich mine in Wave Echo Cave under the Phandelver's Pact, joined by human spellcasters who helped channel the site's magical energy into a great artefact, the Forge of Spells, capable of crafting enchanted items. The pact ended when a powerful force of orcs, reinforced by evil mercenary wizards, attacked to seize the cave's riches; human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge, but the battle's magic destroyed much of the cavern and the defenders were overwhelmed. The cave's location was lost to history afterward, and the site became infested with restless undead and other monsters.

Workings

Beyond the Forge of Spells itself, described as capable of enchanting weapons and other items, the sources found do not detail the mine's ordinary mineral workings — the adventure's focus throughout is on the Forge and the magical/military conflict over it, not on conventional extraction.

What became of it

Rediscovered a month before the adventure begins by the prospector Gundren Rockseeker and his brothers, whose find drew the attention of the drow villain Nezznar, the Black Spider — himself searching for the Forge of Spells, but hindered by the same undead and monsters that have haunted the cave since its fall. Player characters confront Nezznar, contend with the cave's undead, and can rescue Nundro Rockseeker, the last of the three brothers still held prisoner there.
