On 24 March 1933 a fall of stone at Newbiggin Colliery, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, killed the filler Joseph Albert Cook, 24. Robert Armstrong, 29, also a filler, was injured by a fall of stone the same day and died on 13 April.
