What happened

On 6 August 1858 two masons at Cinder Hill Colliery, R. Golder, aged 43, and J. Haywood, aged 24, attempted to remove the centering, the temporary timber support, from under some newly built arching. They did so without authority and in an improper manner, and the arching fell on them, killing both.

John Hedley, H.M. Inspector of Mines, recorded the case in his report for 1858 as the result of the masons' own unauthorised action.
