The mining history in this record

William Layton was born at Lower Gornal, Staffordshire, in 1875 and came to Blackwell for work at the colliery's A Winning. He made his name as a full-back for Blackwell Colliery on the Primrose Hill ground, signed for Chesterfield Town in 1896, and while still working underground played more than a hundred reserve games for The Wednesday. He joined The Wednesday during the 1897-98 season and made more than 300 league appearances for them, winning the First Division in 1902-03 and 1903-04 and the FA Cup in 1907, and was once picked for a Football League XI.

Two later accounts, a correspondent's letter on Healey Hero and a 2022 history of Blackwell Colliery FC, tell that Layton was due on the Sunday night shift at the Blackwell A Winning on 10 November 1895 but stayed at home to rest for a trial with Wednesday the next day. Seven colliers died in the explosion in the Low Main that night, and Layton, taking it as fate, promised that if Wednesday signed him he would never seek a transfer. The letter has him playing 361 games and staying until he retired in 1911; his last game for Wednesday was in fact against Tottenham Hotspur in September 1909, his 362nd appearance. He also played for the Football League against the Irish League in Belfast in 1900, and after Wednesday turned out for Whitwell St Lawrence, where he kept the Butchers Arms.
